What to Wear After a Spray Tan
The wrong outfit after a spray tan can wipe out hours of development. Here's the simple rule: loose, dark, and nothing tight.
The Golden Rule: Loose and Dark
After a spray tan, your skin is coated with solution that needs 6–8 hours to fully develop. During that time, anything tight against your skin can rub the solution off — creating streaks, lines, or light patches. The fix is simple: go loose.
Dark colors are important because bronzer can transfer onto light fabric. It's not permanent and it washes out, but why stress about it — just wear something dark.
Best Clothing Choices After a Spray Tan
These work great post-appointment:
- Loose maxi dress or flowy skirt
- Oversized t-shirt or hoodie (dark colored)
- Wide-leg or loose pants — avoid skinny jeans for the first 8 hours
- Flip flops or open-toed shoes (socks can crease ankles)
- Loose shorts
What to Avoid
These will damage your tan before it sets:
- Tight leggings or skinny jeans
- Bras with underwire or tight straps (go wireless or braless)
- Socks or anything tight around the ankles
- Tight waistbands
- Swimwear or anything elastic
- Gloves (if your hands were tanned)
What About Sleeping?
If you're developing overnight, sleep in loose clothing — or nothing at all. Put a dark towel over your pillow and sheets in case any bronzer transfers. By morning your tan is fully developed and you can shower normally.
Quick Answers
Frequently Asked
Can I wear a bra after a spray tan?
Wait at least 2–3 hours before putting on a bra. When you do, choose a wireless, loose-fitting bra. Tight straps will leave lines in your tan.
How long after a spray tan can I wear normal clothes?
After 6–8 hours (or your first shower), you can wear whatever you like.
Will a spray tan stain my clothes?
Bronzer can transfer onto light clothing while developing, but it washes out normally. The actual DHA tan does not stain.
